Meet Mike Foote
First elected in 2012, Mike Foote represents eastern Boulder County, including Louisville, Lafayette, and Longmont in the Colorado House of Representatives. He quickly assumed a leadership role in issues related to energy, climate change, education, job training, criminal justice, and state government finance. Mike is currently the Chair of the House State, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee and Vice-Chair of the House Finance Committee. He also serves on the House Judiciary and Joint Legislative Legal Committees.
Mike has passed dozens of bills into law, including increased penalties for oil and gas drilling violations, 2013 flood recovery measures, a statewide program enabling high school students to graduate with a technical associate’s degree, school safety measures, and tougher sentences for criminals who harm pregnant women, children, and the elderly. He has fought for the middle class and small businesses, most recently through an effort to close overseas tax loopholes used by large corporations to avoid paying Colorado income taxes.
Outside of the legislative session, Mike also serves a Deputy District Attorney in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office. Since 2004, he has prosecuted virtually every type of offense and spent several years specializing in complex economic crimes prosecutions. He was also a Deputy District Attorney in Durango for two years after graduation from law school.
Mike completed his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, received a master’s degree from the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies and graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law. He was also the founder of the Colorado chapter of the Truman National Security Project, an organization dedicated to educating and training progressives to lead on national security issues.
He is also an avid cyclist and outdoor enthusiast, taking advantage of Boulder County’s open space and scenery at every opportunity. He has fought to preserve Colorado’s amazing environment and to keep Boulder County a wonderful place to live and work.
Mike and his wife Heidi live in Lafayette and have two daughters – Amelia, who is seven years old, and Leanna, who is five years old. Heidi currently works as an accountant for local small businesses and volunteers for Blue Sky Bridge, a child and family advocacy center in Boulder.
Mike’s approach to legislating is deliberative and thoughtful, always looking for areas of bipartisan agreement but not hesitating to fight for what is right in the absence of that common ground. He has advocated for increased citizen roles in the legislative process and worked to make sure everyone is heard at the State Capitol, not just the wealthy and well-connected. He is thankful for the opportunity to serve House District 12 and will continue to work to make Colorado and Boulder County a better place.
